Mission
The Physician Executive’s Coach, Inc.SM supports physician executives in academic medicine by helping them acquire, develop, enhance and apply the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their leadership positions.
This coaching program has been developed to specifically support physicians in academic medicine who are presently in, or aspire to leadership positions, such as: the chief executive officer of a healthcare system; the dean of a medical school; the chair of a clinical department; a cancer center director; or the chief medical officer of an academic medical center hospital, health system or medical group practice.
The time and resources committed to the coaching process represent a durable investment on behalf of the individual and their organization, as the knowledge acquired and the skills developed will serve the physician executive throughout their career as s/he encounters challenges and opportunities now and in the years ahead.
Vision
Since its founding in 1998, we have aspired to offer the highest quality and most impactful executive leadership coaching to physicians in academic medicine. Our commitment is to accelerate knowledge acquisition and skill development for individuals who have been selected for leadership positions because of their past demonstrated performance as excellent physician-scientists, clinicians and medical educators; and to reduce errors and accelerate success (to change the adage from learning through ‘Trial & Error’ to learning through ‘Trial & Success’)… to be a safe port-in-the-storm where a physician executive may confidently and candidly sort through options and consider alternatives when confronting complex issues for which there is no clear good solution. Further, to help physicians who have been trained to be ‘always right’ see that in these leadership roles there is rarely a single, empirically correct, right answer and that a good solution that can be implemented and responsibly amended as the situation unfolds is often the best course of action.
Commitment
Since 1998, The Physician Executive’s Coach has provided the highest quality leadership executive coaching available anywhere to physicians in academic medicine. We are committed to providing confidential, candid, comprehensive and accessible coaching. Our motto is: ‘We provide really smart people with durable leadership skills…We build competence and confidence…We will do whatever it takes to meet needs and exceed expectations of those we serve’.
Diversity
Since 1998, we have made a conscious effort to engage with a diverse representation of physician executives and consciously worked to foster the success of women and people of color in leadership roles. Women make up nearly a third of those receiving comprehensive coaching and half of those supported in their preparation for and negotiation of new leadership positions. More than fifteen percent of those receiving leadership coaching support in both categories are people of color. The percentage of women and people of color are greater in both coaching categories if we look at just the past five years.
Values
We hold sacrosanct the highest ethical standards in all we do. We maintain complete confidentiality during and following our coaching engagements. We are constantly looking for reading/media materials and exercises that will enhance our own coaching abilities and the leadership capabilities of those we serve.
Process
Full-scope leadership coaching: Our engagements are through a retainer contract with the individual’s (the Candidate) institution (the Client) and run for a year’s period of time, renewable annually. All retainer fees (a single fixed amount established at the beginning of the year’s engagement) and expenses (i.e., travel) are paid by the institution. Our fees are generally paid in advance, one-half at the outset and the balance in two payments during the balance of the year. All contracts may be canceled at any time with payment for time and effort expended, as stipulated in the contract. Note: Since 1998, no contract has ever been cancelled and all contracts have run for more than one year…some for as long as 14 years!
Coaching in preparation for interviews for physician executive leadership positions: While these engagements are often paid for by the individual, some individuals have access to professional enrichment funds through the university which may be used for this purpose. These engagements generally last for four-six months but may run longer. Sometimes they involve consideration of more than one position (participation in more than one search). The fee structure is different from a full-scope coaching engagement but so is the focus of the work and its objectives. The fee is also paid in advance, whether by the individual or the institution. Time spent is focused on preparing a well written Letter-of-Interest; identifying likely interview questions at each stage of the search process and developing skills and finesse in answering interview questions for the ‘airport interview’ (often10, five-minute answers that are well formed and responsive to the question); the first and second on-site interview leading to an offer; managing family and trailing-spouse issues; interpretation/assessment of the offer and negotiating the package; preparing for exiting one’s current position and entering their new position. All work is defined in the scope of the retainer agreement.
Premise
Never before has our nation seen such a dramatic change in our healthcare system. Many believe that the time has come for physicians to reassert a greater degree of leadership in directing these changes. Our nation’s academic health centers will play a key role in the transformation of our healthcare system.
